Character name: Bill Grey
Fandom: Star Fox
Timeline: Post-Star Fox 64
Age: 18

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Graduated from Corneria's flight academy with honors. He's an ace pilot and experienced leader, with enough knowledge of military strategy to serve as Commander of two of Corneria's Elite Squadrons. The academy also gave him basic survival training, and enough practice with a gun that he won't shoot himself in the foot.

He also has a good sense of smell and can hear dog whistles. On the other hand, he's colorblind.

How would they use their abilities?: INTEGRITY FIRST, SERVICE BEFORE SELF, EXCELLENCE IN ALL HE DOES. Basically, to help people, especially if civilians are in danger. But since there's not exactly a military for him to join, Fox might be able to talk him into taking up mercenary work instead.

Appearance: A Cornerian Bulldog, meaning he's a walking, talking dog in a green-and-grey flight suit. He matches Fox in many ways, being about the same height (somewhere between 3 1/2 and 4 feet tall) and wearing a yellow bandana to match Fox's red one. His fur is all an even shade of grey, and his eyes... are not seen most of the time, since when he's not wearing his green-and-yellow helmet with a shaded visor, he'll often just wear a pair of shades instead. But you're not missing much: they're a dark, goldish-brown, as unimpressive as the rest of his appearance. Why do you think he normally wears the shades?

Background/Personality: In the beginning, Bill was pretty unremarkable. He was born on Corneria, the most populated planet in the Lylat system. He was the only child of two parents, performed well in school, was a model Cub Scout, was generally liked by other kids but didn't make many close friends or enemies. He was generally kind, a little quiet, unambitious and good at doing what he was told. And if not for one thing, he probably would have lived out an unremarkable life: get a 9 to 5 job, find an ordinary wife, have 2.5 kids, and someday retire to some Cornerian equivalent of Florida.

Instead, he became friends with a young fox named... erm, Fox. And that friendship ended up defining the rest of Bill's life.

For as long as he could remember, Bill looked up to Fox and was his most loyal friend. He did anything and everything Fox told him to do and followed him just about everywhere. So, naturally, when Fox enrolled in the Cornerian flight academy, Bill enrolled as well, even though he lacked the skills that made Fox such an exceptional pilot from the start. And through diligent study and training, Bill was almost able to catch up with Fox. In the process, he ended up outperforming pretty much everyone else at the Academy.

Then, however, Fox's father was betrayed and presumably killed on the planet Venom, and Fox dropped out of the Academy to reform the Star Fox team. And once again, Bill was ready and willing to follow him... until Fox told him, "STAY." After all, the Academy couldn't afford to lose two of its best pilots, and Fox didn't want to risk losing his best friend. And so, even though Bill didn't like it, he stayed to finish his training at the Academy.

It's fortunate for Fox that Bill's not the type to hold grudges, because for a period he was completely outraged at being separated from his best friend for the first time that he could even remember. But in time, he started to grow as a person... erm... as a dog for it, becoming more outspoken and independent while retaining his kind heart and loyal spirit. He wanted to become for the other students of the Academy what Fox had once been for him: A leader, a brother, someone they could always depend on.

He graduated at the top of his class, and immediately joined the Bulldog Squadron, a team that was garrisoned on the arid planet Katina which served as the front line of defense of the Cornerian Defense Force. Over the years, he started to pick up a Katina prarie style of speaking (which makes him sound like a surfer with hints of cowboy) and assumed command of the Bulldog Squadron, and following that the Husky Squadron as well.

It wasn't until Andross invaded the system and the Lylat Wars began that Bill crossed paths with Fox again during the battle for Katina, when the primary military base came under attack by a massive battleship called the Saucerer. They fought together as if they had never been a day apart: Bill took command, tracking the ships hatches and core, while Fox spearheaded the attack and took down the ship. After Katina was secured, Bill departed from his squadrons and started to follow Fox, but was told to turn back before they reached Venom. This time, he returned to the army without argument. The Bulldog and Husky Units needed him, after all. He and Fox would have to catch up on old times once the war against Andross was over.

They never did, because this is the point that Bill is taken from.

If he had continued living in the Lylat System, he would have continued to serve stationed on Titania for years to come. He would probably find an ordinary wife, have 2.5 kids, and someday retire to a ranch on that desert planet he had come to think of as home. Hey, not everyone gets to become a legend.

Bill's most defining trait is his loyalty. Partially to the government, but moreso to the people around him, his friends and comrades. In the middle of a dogfight, he's more concerned with his allies -- the safety of his team, and seeing that they complete their mission objectives -- than celebrating the deaths of enemies. He's honest and reliable, keeps a cool head under pressure, and he's proven himself capable of stepping up and taking command during an attack. When it comes to conflict, his approach is a reactive one: he doesn't like to start fights, but he'll gladly finish one.

Outside of combat he has a casual, good-humored attitude and an open ear. He's always willing to help a friend. And he's always willing to be a friend. Due to the wide variety of sentient races native to the Lylat system, he's willing to trust other species as easily as his fellow canines (with the exception of those that pilot saucers, due to bad war memories). Even when people betray his trust or hurt people close to him, he's quick to forgive if you can show him that you didn't mean it. He's known to chase tail now and then, but he's always open about his intentions and doesn't beg a girl for something she's not ready to give.

All in all, he's a man's -- or a Fox's -- best friend.

Have you read up on how the game works?: DUDE, NAW. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS GAME WORKS. I'LL FIGURE IT OUT AS I GO ALONG.

The guide plug-in is named FlamingFerret. Bill can earn money by begging, stealing, doing missions or becoming a service dog.

1st person sample:

[The camera turns on, showing the view down the length of a big, grey canine muzzle that is too close to the Guide. At the end of the muzzle, there's a... is that a helmet? With a black visor? What kind of sick person puts a helmet on their dog?]

[For a moment, there's nothing but the white noise of him panting on the mic, before he backs up a bit and talks with an undertone of panic.]

Any Cornerian allies in range, please respond. This is Bill Grey, Bulldog Squadron Commander of the Cornerian Defense Force. This is an emergency distress transmission, so again: Cornerian allies, please respond... [He gives a paranoid glance over his shoulder before adding--] and hurry up, I'm begging you!

I've been separated from my ship and taken prisoner on a planet that the native folks call Galacticon. No clue what they have in mind for me. Based on their headgear, I figure they either wanna worship me as a god or kill me to make a new hat. [He pauses.] ... hope that's not why they put that slimy thing in my ear. But it's been a few hours, and I've still got all the lights on upstairs, so I'm guessing not.

The good news is that they have no combat skills to speak of, so the rescue should be a pretty quick job. In fact, I had no problem taking one of their communication devices from them. And I'd already have my tail outta this Charlie Foxtrot of a planet if I could just find where my ship went down--

[Suddenly, his floppy ears perk up, and he moves away from the Guide, looking over the Artist Alley table he's taken cover behind.]

Hang on a sec. Looks like my cover's been compromised.

[The camera now shows what he's hiding from -- furries. A whole troop of Nertaku furries, with cat ears and fox tails in all sorts of eye-burning DayGlo colors. Even the normal Nertaku seem unnerved by their presence.]

HELLO, EVERYFURRY!! WE'RE LOOKING FOR THE MOST YIFFABLY ADORABLE FUR-ALIEN WHO RAN THIS WAY!! HAVE YOU SEEN HIM?

HE IS AN UGLY GREY COLOR BUT WE'VE ALREADY GOT THE ELECTRIC GREEN DYE SO WE CAN MAKE HIS FUR MATCH HIS CLOTHES!!

WE'RE GOING TO CALL HIM RADICAL DOG!!!

[Bill tucks the stolen guide under his arm and leaps over the table, rolling as he lands. The furries spot him, and break into a run. But he's faster, and his relatively small stature gives him an advantage, allowing him to weave through the convention's crowds and escape them. After a few minutes, he finds new cover behind a Pokémon Photoshoot.]

Okay, I've lost them again. Once again... if this is reaching any Cornerian allies, please respond! I need help, pronto!

3rd person sample:

"Thought I might've gotten a few dings on the way down, but..." He doesn't need to finish that thought. This pile of scrap metal is his Cornerian Fighter, beyond any doubt; the green paint job was enough to give it away, never mind the emblem on the wing.

He sighs softly enough that it should have gone unnoticed, if not for the faint, whining whistle coming from his nose bringing it to attention. Is it wrong to get sentimental? It's not as if there's anything special about a Cornerian Fighter. In fact...

He shrugs his shoulders, acts like he's not bothered by the tension. "On the bright side, now there's no reason I can't commission a customized ship!"

But he doesn't sound very excited about this prospect, and it's obvious that he's still feeling glum. Even if it couldn't be distinguished from any other ship in his squadrons, the ship is still his. It's the one he's flown since he first graduated from the Flight Academy, the one he earned his reputation as an ace pilot in. And though it had picked up its fair share of battle scars from dogfights on Katina, this was the first time he had ever managed to wreck it.

He's glad the shaded visor of his helmet stops anyone from seeing that he's tearing up.

"Come on, guys. No use standing around. Let's see if any of this old Fighter's parts can be salvaged."
